SoCal Sees Ankle Biter Mosquito Invasion | NBCLA

“Ankle-biter” mosquitoes will attack day and night, and they like to breed indoors as well as outdoors. And Vector Control says they need just a spoonful of water to lay their eggs. Joel Grover reports for the NBC4 News on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020.

I am so sick and tired of being bit on a near daily basis. I have to inundate myself in bug spray. I still can't figure out how these pests keep getting in my house, doors and windows are closed. I have now resorted to wearing cowboy boots inside and outside so that they at least can't bite my feet. I'm so sick of these, it's a never ending nightmare. Though, I've gotten good at spotting them and will swat them with electric fly swatter. More often than not, by the time I swat them... I've been bitten at least 2 or 3 times.

I think people should know... Aedes, the yellow fever mosquito, is a mosquito that can spread dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever, Mayaro and yellow fever viruses, and other disease agents. The mosquito can be recognized by white markings on its legs and a marking in the form of a lyre on the upper surface of its thorax.

I can't help but to suspect these "year-round mosquito teams" are placing the eggs of newly developed mosquito species into these neighborhoods. I'd love to ask that woman about the circumstances under which she came to be on the news on this topic. Was she approached by the news that coincidentally asked about a mosquito infestation? Or did she get all itchy and call the local news station? I bet the former is more likely accurate. But, I'm a conspiracy theorist so it's just what I suspect. I wouldn't suggest anyone else think that.

This mosquito can carry yellow fever and dengue fever. The aedes (not 80s mosquito) mosquito has been a nuisance in Mexico and the South west USA for centuries. It originally arrived from Africa via cargo ships. The big out breaks are related to temperature increases. This has been the warmest September in recorded history. August was the second hottest August since records were being kept. Their range widens with higher temps. Southern Europe is expected to have a problem with them as global warming increases. The aedes is associated with several arboviruses, including dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever. There will be disease outbreaks as the range of those disease increases along with the range of the mosquito. It is interesting that this piece did not mention the disease threat that comes with the aedes mosquito. Like your forest and brush fires, this is a product of global warming, not a wrathful humanity hating god thing. The increased range of tropical and sub tropical insects and diseases is one of the expected results of warming. This mosquito was responsible for a huge percent of the thousands who died building the Panama canal.

The bites itch, are painful, and swell to the size of a golf ball or larger with a very large hot, red area around them. Had one on my foot and thought I broke my foot or something. Took over a month and a half to go away. Roommate has large, painful ones that leave a discoloration of her skin. Neighbor complaining of similar symptoms.
